All Planned Out?
The Worldwide Impact of the British Town and Country Planning System

18 and 19 May 2007

David Birkbeck

David is chief executive of Design for Homes, which he helped set up in 2000 as a not-for-profit vehicle to research and promote the value of good design in housing.

Despite leading a research body, David assumes the following:

  • Homes should be better built
  • Homes should be better designed
  • Homes should be built in greater volumes

Design for Homes' research looks at how to do this, with the end user in mind. The need to trade off between consumer preferences and professional criteria underpins much of the organisation's output. Notably Perceptions of Privacy and Density in Higher Density Housing and Car Parking: What works where, which is a toolkit, looking at more than 100 treatments, published in association with English Partnerships.

David created a web site to show the public how much space you should aim for in a home, www.swingacat.info, which includes remarkable findings about which internal floor plans work best for families.

David is rapporteur and judge for the department of Communities and Local Government's Housing Design Awards, runs the Building for Life office for CABE and the Home Builders Federation, and is a board member of the Housing Forum.

He was a judge on the Design for Manufacture competition, and is on the steering group of the Carbon Challenge.

David is currently part of a team writing a housing design compendium for the Republic of Ireland's DOE.

David recently built his own family house, which he vows never to do again.
